FINDING THE BACON
By Kimberly Ripley
=========================

Greetings, avid freelancers, and welcome to this issue of Finding the
Bacon. Literary journals are often the first types of magazines
freelancers query when just starting out. Don't be fooled, however.
Most literary journals are run by colleges or universities and have
some of the strictest guidelines in the business. In most cases, one
need not be a member of the faculty or study body to have their work
considered for submission. Literary journals typically make
interesting and impressive clips. Check out these literary journals,
delve into your files of fact or fiction, and send out a submission or
two.

MEET THE EDITORS:
Karen Axelton
By Meryl K. Evans
=========================

Meet Karen Axelton, executive editor of Entrepreneur Magazine.

Karen Axelton is Executive Editor of Entrepreneur Magazine. Starting
as an editorial assistant, Axelton has worked for Entrepreneur Media
Inc. for 18 years in various editorial capacities, including Copy Chief,
Managing Editor for Business Start-Ups (a magazine targeting new
businesses), and Editor of Entrepreneur.com, the magazine's web
site.  She oversees the magazine's "Sell" section (focusing on sales
and marketing issues) and has also worked as a freelance writer and
a marketing copywriter.

Q: How did you become an editor? And how did you get involved with
Entrepreneur?

Fresh out of college, as did most of our editors. Entrepreneur really
believes in promoting from within. Aside from our editorial director,
our three executive editors, and three articles editors all started in
entry-level positions such as editorial assistant.

Q: What is your policy regarding submissions from new and
emerging writers?

We typically assign articles to freelance writers who have substantial
business writing backgrounds. Those writers who do not have that
experience should send queries that show their strong reporting skills
and a thorough knowledge of our magazine. Because we receive so
many queries from established business writers, a new writer would
need a very strong query.

Q: What are magazine's focus and its audience?

Our audience is owners of small and midsize businesses who are
looking for hands-on advice on running and growing their companies.

Q: What articles are you looking for? What are the departments and
the description of each?

We are looking for sophisticated treatment of business issues. Our
readers are beyond the business basics and want to know how
current trends affect them. Whether it's doing business in China, rising
health-insurance costs or the growing power of women consumers as
a market, we put a hands-on spin on it by showing how readers can
benefit from/protect themselves from/deal with the issue.

Our departments are generally not open to freelancers; they are
written by regular columnists. Areas where writers can break in are
feature articles (including the feature in the "Be Your Own Bo.ss"
section, which is the one section of the magazine that focuses on
startup topics);

"Snapshots," which are short profiles of entrepreneurs using
innovative techniques to market, finance or manage their businesses,
or of innovative technology entrepreneurs; and the "Forward" section,
which includes short (250 to 625-word) newsy articles on trends and
issues relevant to entrepreneurs. Before querying, read the
magazine, available online at Contact Info Deleted , where you can
also find our writer's guidelines (see further down for link).

Q: What do you not need?

We do not need articles geared toward employees or general
consumers; business owners are our sole focus.

Q: What was an interesting way you've been approached by a writer?

We get most excited by exceptional query letters. Phone calls, funky
mailings and simultaneous queries don't typically get a good
response.  We simply want writers who can succinctly, skillfully and
interestingly tell us why their story needs to be in Entrepreneur.

Q: How many freelance articles do you typically accept?

It varies, but probably not more than five a month

Q: What does the basic contract involve and what is the pay structure?

We buy exclusive first worldwide rights. Payment varies, up to $1 per
word.

Q: What is the editing process when dealing with freelance written
articles?

Our articles editors assign the articles and are the point of contact
for the writers in the article's early stages. Later, an editorial
assistant will contact the writer for any follow-up questions.

Q: What is the process for writers who wish to contact your
magazine?

The process is detailed in our writer guidelines, at
Contact Info Deleted

Q: Proposal vs. full article? Resume, clips, queries, etc.?

We accept proposals only and strongly discourage writers from
sending completed manuscripts. With the query, include resume and
clips. Send the query to Karen Axelton, Executive Editor,
Contact Info Deleted or 2445 McCabe Way, Suite 400, Irvine,
CA 92614. No faxes or phone calls, please.

Q: How can writers get a copy of your magazine?

It's available on most newsstands or by calling Contact Info Deleted. You
can also find the full content, including archives, online at
Contact Info Deleted.
